When to Change your Scooter's Gear Oil or Transmission Oil


Maintaining a scooter is something that a user might have to do every 45-60 days depending on usage. But these maintenance are limited to engine oil change, brake pad scrubbing, washing, etc.

But over the course of usage, there are a few more things that you need to intricately look at when it comes to maintenance of your scooter and ensuring that keeps of delivering optimum performance and fuel economy.

One such crucial thing is the gear oil change or the transmission oil change. If you are wondering why would a gearless scooter require a gear oil change, don't worry, I thought the same way few months back. Luckily the service mechanic at a Yamaha service station was more than kind to educate me on this topic.

Though these scooters operate with an automatic dry clutch, they mechanism has an inbuilt gear system. That is the reason, the acceleration is smooth and you do not experience that jerk that you usually get on geared vehicles.

Timely change of gear oil or transmission oil ensures smoother running of the vehicle and longevity of the clutch plate.

To change the gear oil or transmission oil, you will need:

1. Drain Pan
2. Commonly used 10W40 or 10W50 gear oil. If your scooter has specific gear oil combination, then always use the same specification.
3. A wrench with 10mm socket.

Brands always recommend gear or transmission oil after the scooter has traversed a certain range. The range is usually 4,000 to 6,000 KMs You can have the oil changed during regular servicing or you can also change it at your home. It will hardly take 10-15 minutes.

While changing the gear oil by yourself, or having changed by a mechanic always ensure that the amount should not exceed more than 120 ml. You can inquire on the exact amount for your scooter from the showroom or service station.

                  

So if you missed on changing the gear oil or the transmission of your scooter, get it done right away.

Changing gear oil will cost you Rs. 300 to 400 at max and that is including labor charges in any garage. However, if there is any damage on the clutch of your scooter, it can set you back by close to 5 grand. I am saying this out of a very memorable experience.
